“1 out of 3 abandoned by children” (New Straits Times, Dec 6) According
to the article, 1 out of 3 old people that aged 60 and above or about 675,000 old
people are abandoned and don’t receive and financial support from their
children.
This issues also similar to the issues that I talked about
in my previous blog, crime that actively happen in Malaysia nowadays. This two
issues are not happen to this extend at the last century and the reasons beside
also different.
Firstly, we should find out what are those reasons that
forces children nowadays are willing to send their parents in to the welfare
homes or not giving any financial support to them. People nowadays are busy
working to earn money for higher quality of life. They are busy when they are
working and they are still busy after they go back home as they have to
continue their work or social activities. People especially those who live in
the city are live under stress, they squeeze by their boss, their colleagues,
their customers and even stranger. People cannot get angry with what others have
did to them as those people are people that they not really know and paying
them. But they feel that they can release their stress to their family members
and it used to happen to their parents because their parents used to be long-winded
on asking them many question. So there are some children that bored and hate
with that kind of care then they choose to send their parents to the welfare
homes so that they don’t have to face their parent every day.
Sometimes when people are getting old they might powerless
in doing things which caused they occur some accident then face mobility
problem. It also one of the reasons why the children nowadays will send their
parents to welfare homes. They are not patient to take care of their parents’
daily activities from meals, hygiene and etc. Some of them will also feel
disgusting when they have to help their parent to clean their excreta and
sometimes they said they are smelly also. Some children that like party or
bring friends to their house will also feel that their parents will hinder them
to having fun and also it will be very embarrassing if their friend saw their
parents that are mobility. To avoid that situation happen, they will rather
send they parents to welfare homes.
But it is still acceptable if the children sending their
parents to the welfare homes if they are busy and have no time to take care of
their parents. Especially those old people who already retire and have nothing
to do, they need people to care about them and talk to them. If the children
that are really busy in working, it is another solution for them to provide
their parents a more comfortable and enjoyable life by sending them to the
welfare homes. If the children can afford the high fees, there are many welfare
homes nowadays that have a comprehensive and variety of facilities such as
karaoke room and also games room. Old people can get to know more friends to
have interesting activities together. Sometimes welfare homes also provide
classes for the old people to enrich their skills and knowledge to keep them up
to date.
It also acceptable if the reason why they send their parents
to the welfare homes is because of they don’t know the right way to take care
of their parents that need good treatment to recover especially for those old
people that are sick. Sometimes those old people that are sick, they need
special care like medicine and also treatment to help them to recover. It might
need some machine to do so but for normal people that don’t know how to operate
the machine it cause some difficulties to them. They can consider to send their
parents to those welfare homes with professional nursing services to take good
care with their parents.
About sending parents to welfare homes is right or wrong, it
really depend on how the children think about it. If those children are sending
their parents to the welfare homes because they feel annoying with their parents
and they don’t pay the fees (which may cause their parents being drive away
from the welfare homes and cannot go back home after that) and never or rarely
visit their parents after they send their parents to the welfare homes then it
consider as wrong. Because they are sending their parents to the welfare homes
they don’t want to take the responsibilities of taking care of their parents. But
if children are forced to do so because of ability and certain reasons such as
to provide better environment to their parents and they did always visit their
parents when they are free, for me it consider as right.
It is a better solution to send old people to welfare homes compare
to leaving the old people in house especially those who have difficulties in
daily activities. There are some cases that happen whereby the old people are
die because of they happen some accident when they are alone in the house and
no one found out and they miss the chance to rescue the old people. Some people
who are cruel would let their parents that might have some disabilities to
settle the daily activities themselves. For example, the children just prepared
food for their parent that getting weaker whereby they are not able to eat
themselves.( They don’t even have the energy to take the spoon) There are also
some children that are not concern with their parents and they don’t send their
parents to the hospital or clinic if they are injured but just let the wound to
become more serious.
The first concept of having welfare homes is to provide solution
and bring convenient for those busy working children to taking care of their
old parents. But now we can see that they are some people that looking at it as
a way to abandoned their parents that is a burden for them. Some children will
send their parents to the welfare homes just because of their couple or partner
don’t like. There are also some old people being abandoned because of their
children don’t want to take the responsibilities of taking care of them (which
used to see in television program or drama). There are also others reason like
the old people are not contributing in the family but spending a lot, the old
people are to annoying and etc.
What happen to the people nowadays? Is there any problem
with our current education? Why this kind of unethical behavior will happen on
people nowadays in this advanced century? Don’t they feel guilty on what they
have did? Don’t they have even one minutes that recall back their childhood
memory of how their parents take care of them? Don’t they even thought of it
might be a life cycle whereby how they treat their parents now it will happen
on them also? People nowadays become very selfish and money doctrine which make
them concern on their own benefits only. We should review things that we have
did and identify it is right or wrong? If it is wrong how we should do to
correct it? We should consider how if we are in that situation, how we would
like others to treat us? In Chinese, there was a proverb that conclude that if
we have old people in our family we seems like have a treasure. Why it state
like this? Because old people are more experience than us and they faced
through what we are facing now.
How we can solve this abandoned problem? Is it by what had
included in the New Straits Times (Dec 9), “Pension can prevent destitution in
old age”???
